WARREN ZEVON

From Chicago, Illinois. A graduate of the California school of 70's rockers, Zevon managed to transcend that scene and stay in the light of musical change, unlike most of his contemporaries. The son of Russian immigrants and a child musical prodigy, Zevon's first major job in the music world came while still in his teens as piano player and musical director for the Everly Brothers. As a songwriter, his songs were recorded by Linda Ronstadt to some success ("Poor, Poor Pitiful Me") and he began his own recording career with the encouragement of Jackson Browne. Combating an alcohol problem set Zevon's career down a different road for the first half of his career but the resulting work in his albums continued to be innovative. He also took the time out to record an album with the instrument playing members of R.E.M. as the Hindu Love Gods. In 2002, Zevon announced that he had terminal lung cancer and surpassed the doctors expectations on his longevity (a few months) by living long enough to spend time with his family and make one last great album. "The Wind" was released in August of 2003 and he passed away shortly after on September 7, 2003 leaving a legacy of some of the most intelligent and irony riddled lyrics in rock history. Zevon's feelings about mortality were reflected in many of his lyrics, song titles and album titles and his confrontation with his own mortality will stand as a brave and repeatable story in rocklore for years to come. Warren's advice to all in his final days was to "enjoy every sandwich". He was 56 years old. 1969-2003.
