FRANK ZAPPA
From Baltimore, Maryland. As a solo artist and with his original band the Mothers Of Invention, Zappa represented many things to many people; avante-jazz rocker, composer of classical music, opera lothario, wry political commentator, rock and roll guitarist. He was always on the cutting edge of every scene he decided to invade. Zappa provided the soundtrack to rock that allowed strangeness to be acceptable. He helped form one of the first all girl rock bands (The GTO's - Girls Together Outrageously) which included well know rock groupie Miss Pamela (later known as author Pamela DesBarres). His original band, The Mothers Of Invention included Ray Collins (vocals/harmonica), Roy Estrada (bass) and Jimmy Carl Black (drums). After the band parted ways, the remaining members continued on as The Grandmothers. Zappa also incorporated many musicians into his traveling bands that included all the future members of Missing Persons, Adrian Belew, Steve Vai, Flo & Eddie of The Turtles, and many others. Frank Zappa died of prostate cancer in 1993 at the age of 52. Rest in peace man. Frank's daughter Moon Unit recorded a hit with Frank ("Valley Girl") before moving on to an acting and writing career. His sons Ahmet & Dweezil have grown up to become musicians carrying on the Zappa legacy. Dweezil also hosts a cooking show with singer Lisa Loeb on the Food Network. 1966-93.
