THE WOODENTOPS
From Peckham, England. Led by Rolo McGinty (vocals/bass) with Simon Mawby (guitar), Anne Stephenson (violin/keyboards), Frank DeFrietas (bass) and Benny Staples (drums). An incredible band that self-destructed rather quickly. McGinty was formerly with The Jazz Butcher for the two years previous to forming The Woodentops. His hyper-kinetic pop and skiffle was very refreshing in this group and their debut album made many critics best lists. By 1988, the band became a growing multi-racial combo and mutated into an Ibiza style dance outfit but when their record company closed shop, so did the band. McGinty later formed the Bad Apples. 2010 saw the release of a new Woodentops single, the first in 22 years! 1986-88/2010.
