From Manchester, England. One of the early UK punk groups led by Colin Newman (vocals/guitar) with Graham Lewis (bass), Bruce Gilbert (guitar) and Robert Gotobed (drums). This group was one of the original wave of punk rockers from England but not really known that well in the US until their 1987 reformation. When Gotobed left the band in 1990, the group dropped a letter off their name as a salute and became Wir. In recent years the band Elastica plagiarized the guitar hook from Wire's "Three Girl Rhumba" for their song "Connection" resulting in a law suit that Elastica lost. Wire reunited for a "farewell" show in 1996. Another reunion happened in 2000 with a full tour of the US and UK and in 2002, Wire returned once again with all original members in place and a sound tapping the best of both previous incarnations. 1977-81/1987-91/2002-present.
