From London, England. Not since Mari Wilson has a British female jazz artist, skipped genres and flown into the pop charts with such speed and phenomenal appreciation. After a widely lauded jazz debut, Winehouse disappeared for three years between albums, only to come back as a beautiful train wreck of conflicting styles. Jazz meets R&B, girl group meets soul, and all live together as if it had always been so simple when it comes from her music and lyrics. Exemplified by her honey smoke vocals now laid on top of classic Motown, ska, doo-wop and other 50's and 60's influences, Winehouse has transcended her early labeling to become something more and even something new by embracing the styles of the past for inspiration. Her body, also a mixture of conflicting imagery, mixes femininity with street androgyny. From her lip pierce as beauty mark, to her tattoo collection that seems to grow daily, she mixes high couture with biker bar presence. Her speaking voice, a mix of barely understandable Cockney slang, juxtaposes with the classic jazz tinge of her singing persona. The UK press has made much of her drinking habits (such as a tooth she lost after falling down drunk on to her face) and her admission to being a non-medicated manic depressive. Lately, she entered rehab a few times, divorced her husband but still dates him, and got a boob job. 2003-present.
