WENDY O. WILLIAMS
The former leader of New York City's Plasmatics, Wendy Orlean Williams continued to roar her way past punk and into hardcore, speed metal and rap. Always an acquired taste, she met with more infamy than actual success. In 1991, Wendy retired from rock, moved away to the country with husband and former manager Rod Swenson and worked for a food co-op as well as with animal rehabilitation. On April 6, 1998, Wendy went into the woods near her home and committed suicide via a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a long bout of depression. She was 48 years old. Her suicide note contained the following thoughts..."I don't believe that people should take their own lives without deep and thoughtful reflection over a considerable period of time...I do believe strongly, however, that the right to do so is one of the most fundamental rights that anyone in a free society should have. For me much of the world makes no sense, but my feelings about what I am doing ring loud and clear to an inner ear and a place where there is no self, only calm. Love Always, Wendy". Rest in peace Wendy. 1982-88.
