THE WEIRDOS

From Los Angeles.  A huge influence on the L.A. new wave scene.  Led by John Denney (vocals) and brother Dix Denney (guitar) with Art Fox (drums), Cliff Roman (guitar) and Dave Trout (bass).  Dix later ended up in Thelonius Monster and Dig.  The Weirdos broke up in 1980, reformed for a time in 1990, and still play out together every now and then.  Former drummer Jonathan Melvoin was a touring keyboardist with Smashing Pumpkins when he accidentally died from a drug overdose in 1996.  He was the brother of Wendy Melvoin of Wendy & Lisa fame.  The Weirdos were one of the first L.A. punk bands to record and their early singles are as potent as X, The Avengers and others from that time.  Early important singles included "Destroy All Music" and "We've Got The Neutron Bomb".  1977-80/1990.
