THE WATERBOYS

MIKE SCOTT

 

 

From Edinburgh, Scotland.  Led by Mike Scott (vocals/guitar) with Karl Wallinger (keyboards), Steve Wickham (violin/organ), Anthony Thistlewaite (saxophone/mandolin), Trevor Hutchinson (bass/bouzouki) and Sharon Shannon (accordian).  Scott's previous band was called Another Pretty Face and had released some non-hit singles in the U.K. when he changed directions to form The Waterboys.  A sound of anthem style rock not unlike The Alarm and early U2, Scott began leaning towards acoustic Irish folk just as the band began to get an audience. This prompted Wallinger to leave and form World Party to great success. Wickham had joined the band from In Tua Nua.  Scott continued the tin whistle musings for several more albums before going solo.  The band's name comes from the Lou Reed song "The Kids".  After eleven years of playing solo, Scott reclaimed the group name and released a new album of Waterboys material in 2001.  1981-93/2001-present.
