VELVET REVOLVER

From Los Angeles.  Led by Scott Weiland (vocals) with Slash (guitar), Matt Sorum(drums), Duff McKagen (bass) and Dave Kushner (guitar).  Following the trend set by Audioslave, uniting lead singer of one type of rock with a back-up band formerly associated with another type of rock, is actually not something new.  It just isn't very successful.  Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.  In the case of Audioslave it sounded like Led Zeppelin rehashed instead of grunge meeting rap-rock.  In the instance of Velvet Revolver, we find the marriage between the former Stone Temple Pilots frontman and the bulk of the former Guns & Roses to be much more palatable.  When grunge destroyed the hair metal scene, G&R were releasing covers of punk tunes ("The Spaghetti Incident") showing that maybe they had something more to offer.  But the heavy metal scene had dominated rock too long and no one was interested in what that band had to say anymore.  Sitting out a decade on the sidelines hasn't hurt their chops at all.  Still sizzling musicians, they joined the sometimes unstable STP singer to form something new and even better than both their previous bands.  Yes, it's calculated, it's a little too well produced, but.......
IT ROCKS.  Is it alternative?  We'll give Weiland his props on this one because this music sounds a lot like where STP could have gone if they'd stayed together.  In 2008, Weiland quit the band and reunited with Stone Temple Pilots.  Undaunted, the band has decided to continue on without him, with music and tours sketched in for 2011.  McKagen has since joined the line-up of Jane's Addiction while Slash has released a solo album.  2003-present.
