THE VELVET UNDERGROUND

From New York City. The seminal group led by Lou Reed (vocals/guitar) and John Cale (piano/viola) with Maureen "Mo" Tucker (drums) and Sterling Morrison (bass). Other members included Nico (vocals) on the first album, Doug Yule (guitar) who replaced John Cale and Willie "Loco" Alexander (vocals/guitar) who joined the band after Reed's departure. "Produced" by Andy Warhol, the Velvets were a crucial part of the NY underground scene from 1967-70 and the centerpiece of Warhol's "Exploding Plastic Inevitable" show. They were creating what would become the New York punk scene while the rest of the world was listening to The Beatles singing about peace and love. Reed and Cale's dynamic was often edgy and Reed's side affair with Nico caused friction all around. By their third album, Doug Yule had replaced Cale and the band took a quieter direction in sound. Reed quit in 1970 and the band soldiered on without him for a few years. Reuniting with all four original members (minus Nico) for a European tour in 1993, the band had a planned M-TV Unplugged special which fell apart after Reed tried to assert too much control over the other band members. Sterling Morrison died of cancer in 1995. Alexander became a well known Boston based solo artist. 1967-73.
