U2

From Dublin, Ireland. Led by Bono Vox (Paul Hewson)(vocals) with The Edge (David Evans)(guitar), Adam Clayton (bass) and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums). Originally called The Hype, the U2 name is about being included and not about the American spy plane as widely thought in their early days. Their anthems and political songs gained them a huge following during the 80's which they betrayed for cutting edge pop during the 90's. U2 has however become one of the longest lived successful alternative bands on the planet. Their career began with a strong college radio following for their first two albums, followed by a memorable video promoting their third. When the iconic image of Bono waving a giant white truce flag broadcast its way across M-TV in the early 80's, an ambivalent rock audience quickly noticed that there might be some substance to this band. By their fifth studio album "The Joshua Tree", U2 had reached a new plateau cementing them as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Since then, the band has never been afraid to try whatever direction pleases them, sometimes striking gold and just as often missing the public mark entirely. Bono's side career as an activist for ending world debt has sometimes made the band seem marginal in comparison. Meeting with world political and religious leaders on a regular basis, this humble Irish rocker's opinions have somehow become a part of world politics. Well meaning goals aside, the band continues to grow and develop with every new album which is a true rarity among groups with this kind of longevity. 1979-present.
