TYPE O NEGATIVE
From Brooklyn, New York. Led by Peter Steele (vocals/bass) with Kenny Hickey (guitar), Josh Silver (keyboards) and John Kelly (drums). Severe goth influenced dirge metal that had a strong following with the Tool and Korn crowd. Steele's deep vocals often delivered lower notes than his bass guitar! As an alternative to straight ahead metal, the gothic influence works very well here. As an alternative to standard rock, it's not all that different from what alternative music was trying to get away from in the first place. Steele was also a member of the band Carnivore before forming Type O Negative. On April 14, 2010, Steele died suddenly of heart failure at age 48 leaving behind his mark on alt. rock history. While Type O Negative never garnered any real hits, it can be said that they became the prototype and the best example of what the goth-metal genre was all about. 1991-present.
