JOHNNY THUNDERS

From New York City.  John Genzale Jr. named himself after a DC Comics character who had the power to summon a sentient lightning bolt.  Just like that Johnny could summon forth a bit of magic, this Johnny too could summon magic through his guitar.  Johnny began the second phase of his career in 1975 after leaving the New York Dolls.  Forming The Heartbreakers with Richard Hell provided a coup for Thunders, who, while a talented guitarist was not much of a songwriter.  Many Hell classics became part of Thunders permanent repertoire when Hell left the band.  Johnny had a very serious drug problem which with all candor should have killed him many years before his eventual death by drug overdose in 1991.  There was however a short time when Johnny struck out on his own with solo work covering all his best known material from "Too Much Junkie Business" to "So Alone".  He will remain one of the great unsung heroes of punk rock. 1977-90.
