TELEVISION

From New York City.  Led by Tom Verlaine (Tom MIller)(vocals/guitar) and Richard Hell (Richard Meyers)(vocals/bass) with Richard Lloyd (guitar) and Billy Ficca (drums).  The first band to establish the New York city punk scene!  Verlaine's efforts to get the band a venue to play at resulted in club owner Hilly Kristal making his CBGB's (Country, Blue Grass & Blues) the first true mecca of the New York City punk scene.  They began under the name The Neon Boys. Verlaine's desires for the band outweighed his tolerance for his partner and he forced Hell out of the band.  Hell's replacement was Fred Smith who was at the time the bassist for Blondie!  Television's work was pioneering and led the way for the artier moments in New York City punk.  Hell took his more relaxed and fun punk ethic to The Heartbreakers and then as a solo artist but never really found the fame he deserved.  After the group split, Verlaine and Lloyd went on to solo careers while Ficca played with The Waitresses and The Washington Squares.  In 1991, after fifteen years apart, Television reformed for a new album that showed all the fire of their early works.  The reunion was short lived however.  The band reformed once more for a 2001 performance at a UK festival and has since reunited for performances but no recordings.  1974-78/1991-92.
