JOE STRUMMER

From England, born in Ankara, Turkey.  The former co-leader of The Clash. John Mellor began his punk career in the band The 101'ers.  Hooking up with Mick Jones and company he became the focal point of The Clash and inspired the sound of punks everywhere, right up to today's pop punk sound of Rancid, Green Day and the like.  After The Clash ended, he took small acting roles and contributed music to several soundtracks.  He also went on the road with The Pogues, taking the place of fired lead singer Shane MacGowan but did not join on a permanent basis.  His solo was few and far between, taking a full ten years between his first and second solo albums. Strummer had recently been becoming a more visible fixture in music again with two album releases in three years, when quite unexpectedly he passed away in December of 2002 from a heart attack (at age 50) after walking his dog.  1986-present.
