THE STROKES

From New York City.  Led by Julian Casablancas (vocals) with Albert Hammond Jr. (guitar), Nikolai Fraiture (bass), Nick Valensi (guitar) and Fabrizio Moretti (drums).  It could be said that 2001 saw the great hype machine in action when The Strokes first started to gain attention in America.  The flavor of the week in England where bands are loved and hated within a month by the music press, the question was, is it hype or talent?  The facts are that The Strokes are the first band from New York City to actually represent a movement (new garage) since the original punk movement and have brought back a sound missing from rock since the early days of CBGB's.  Luck or calculation doesn't seem to matter at this point because they are a success. Casablancas is the son of John Casablancas the famous modeling agent, and just happens to resemble Richard Hell.  Moretti made the news by his past engagement to actress Drew Barrymore.  Albert Jr. is of course the son of the great songwriter/guitarist Albert Hammond.  Nick Valensi has rounded out the tabloids by marrying former UK party girl and ex-wife of Duran Duran's John Taylor; Amanda DeCadenet.  All the band members have released solo side projects.  2001-present.
