THE STRAY CATS

From Massapequa, New York. Led by Brian Setzer (vocals/guitar) with Slim Jim Phantom (Jim McDonell)(drums) and Lee Rocker (Leon Drucker)(bass). Setzer originally formed a band with his brother Gary called The Bloodless Pharaohs to little acclaim. They also had a rockabilly band called The Tom Cats which became the inspiration for The Stray Cats. Forming his new band with high school friends Rocker and Phantom, they took the band to England for a year and came back stars. Rockabilly is a classic American music form and being produced by Dave Edmunds certainly contributed to their success. The group broke up in 1983 as Setzer went solo and the remaining members hooked up with guitarist Earl Slick to form Phantom, Rocker & Slick. A 1986 Stray Cats album appeared to fulfill contractual obligations. The band again reformed in 1989 and stayed together for another five years before Setzer departed to form his big band orchestra. Today, The Stray Cats regroup for tours and record if the inspiration strikes them. 1981-83/1986/1989-94.
