THE STONE ROSES
From Manchester, England. Led by Ian Brown (vocals) with John Squire (guitar), Gary "Mani" Mounfield (bass) and Robbie Jay Maddix (drums). The group began in 1980 as The Patrol, then English Rose (a song by The Jam) and finally The Stone Roses. One of the popular acts of the Madchester scene, they became embroiled in the classic legal battle with a record label which kept them from releasing new music for many years while they fought to break free from their label. Eventually releasing an album, the reception was lukewarm as the music scene had changed prompting Squire to quit the band which led to an eventual full band split. Squire began a new group called The Seahorses while Brown went solo. Mounfield ended up in Primal Scream. 1985-96.
