SOUL ASYLUM

 

 

From Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Led by Dave Pirner (vocals/guitar) with Dan Murphy (guitar), Karl Mueller (bass) and Sterling Campbell (drums).  They started with punk roots and named themselves Loud Fast Rules. Soul Asylum, like their labelmates The Replacements, released many albums on the legendary Twin-Tone label before moving on to the majors and eventual success.  Pirner gained much attention when he became romantically involved with actress Winona Ryder for a short period.  Murphy is also a member of critically acclaimed band Golden Smog.  In 2002, Pirner released a solo album.  On June 19, 2005 Mueller passed away after a year long battle with throat cancer.  Mueller's replacement, no pun intended, is former Replacements guitarist Tommy Stinson.  1984-present.
