THE SMITHS

From Manchester, England. Led by Stephen Morrissey (vocals) and Johnny Marr (John Maher)(guitar) with Andy Rourke (bass) and Mike Joyce (drums). This band advanced alternative rock by bringing the guitar back in stronger ways than the synth driven new wave of the period. Brooding and self-absorbed, Morrissey's lyrics cried emotion while Marr's hypnotic guitar propelled each song. Their career high point is undoubtedly the song "How Soon Is Now" recorded live in the studio for a BBC appearance! The band split when Morrissey grabbed for a solo career while Marr joined The The and later, Electronic. Years later both Rourke and Joyce successfully sued Morrissey and Marr for a bigger share of royalties. While Joyce chose to settle out of court, Rourke pursued the suit and ended up being awarded $2 million and a 25% stake of future royalties. This effectively ended any friendships between the members and there will never be a reunion. Morrissey has had some success with his latest solo disc while Marr formed The Healers. As of 2006, Marr officially became a member of Modest Mouse and in 2008 joined The Cribs! 1983-88.
