SMASHING PUMPKINS
From Chicago, Illinois. Led by Billy Corgan (vocal/guitar) with James Iha (guitar), Melissa Auf Der Mar (bass) and Jimmy Chamberlain (drums). Corgan originally led a gothic band called The Marked, in Florida. The band was on a steady climb to success when tragedy happened. Touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin died of a heroin overdose in the company of Jimmy Chamberlain. Chamberlain was let go from the band as a result, but after several years, the band brought their former comrade back into the fold. Both Iha and original bassist D'Arcy Wretzky have released side projects on cd. Wretzky left the band in 1999 after disagreements with Corgan. Despite the turmoil, Smashing Pumpkins became one of the most popular alternative bands of the 90's. Auf Der Mar joined on from Hole and Corgan announced in 2000 that that would be the band's last year of existence. True to his word, the group released one last album online as a free goodbye to their fans. After a tour as an auxiliary guitarist for New Order, Corgan reunited with Chamberlain for a new project called Zwan. By 2005, Chamberlain formed a new group, Iha joined A Perfect Circle, Auf Der Mar released a solo disc, and Corgan tried his hand at poetry. Corgan's subsequent solo career turned out to be less than stellar and announcing a reformation of the group, he again linked with Chamberlain and new members Ginger Reyes (bass), Jeff Schroeder (guitar) and Lisa Harriton (keyboards). Chamberlain has since quit the group. Attention came back to the group through the trailer for the movie "Watchmen" which featured "The Beginning Is The End Is The Beginning", a song originally found on the "Batman & Robin" soundtrack. In 2009, Corgan announced a new album that would be released as a series of EP's which would form a complete album over time, the first release "A Song For A Son" was issued in 2009. 1990-2001/2007-present.
