THE SLITS

From London.  Led by Ari Up (Arianna Forster)(vocals) with Palmolive (Paloma Romero McLardy)(drums), Viv Albertine (guitar) and Tessa Pollit (bass).  Formed by a then 14 year old Ari Up (Ari's Mom Nora is married to John Lydon), this all girl outfit would become an important band in the UK punk explosion.  A chaotic and very punk live act, their recording career does not reflect their importance on the scene.  Albertine was an original member of an early version of The Clash.  Many members would come and go in the band including Kate Kaos (guitar) who would later form The Mo-Dettes, and Budgie (drums) who would later play with Siouxsie & The Banshees.  Palmolive left to join another early all woman punk band, The Raincoats, today she's a Spanish teacher in the Massachusetts school system.  Neneh Cherry also claims brief membership in this band as well.  In 2006, Ari Up and Tessa Pollit reunited as The Slits and released new music followed by a full length album, their first in 24 years, in 2009.  Not to be left out on the comeback trail, Viv Albertine released her "Flesh" EP in 2010.  On October 19, 2010, Ari Up died at age 48 after a serious illness.  Too young to die does not express the extra tragedy found here in a band that were just finding their way back to recognition.  1979-81/2006-09.
