THE SEX PISTOLS
From London. Led by Johnny Rotten (John Lydon)(vocals) with Steve Jones (guitar), Glen Matlock (bass) and Paul Cook (drums). Jones and Cook were musicians looking for work when they ran across Malcolm McLaren, proprietor of a clothing store called "Sex" and a former manager of The New York Dolls. McLaren had the smarts and experience from New York City's burgeoning punk scene to make something happen in his homeland and Cook and Jones were in the right place at the right time. Together this group made one groundbreaking album that is now considered one of rock's all time classics. Unfortunately McLaren's creation was rife with strife, internal problems abounded and Matlock was let go, replaced by Rotten's friend Sid Vicious (John Simon Ritchie) a heroin addict who added charisma to the band but was a horrible musician. Gearing together for a North American tour, the band's record label hired security not to protect the band but to keep them in line. The situation became intolerable and the band split apart while on tour. Vicious flew to New York where he played gigs with local punk stars to feed his habit which eventually killed him not long after. Rotten returned to England and formed Public Image Ltd. Cook and Jones recorded a few more pieces but eventually gave up the band name and became The Professionals before moving on to other projects (solo work, Chiefs Of Relief, etc.). McLaren concentrated on fostering other bands in the wake of the split (Bow Wow Wow) and ended up a recording artist of sorts as well. 20 years after the band split, the original line up reformed for a reunion tour prompting their contemporaries Siouxsie & The Banshees to break up as a protest! But as in all things, money makes the judgment and both Siouxsie and The Sex Pistols have reformed again for tours. 1977-79/1996.
