THE SELECTER
From Coventry, England. Led by Neol Davies (guitar) and Pauline Black (Pauline Vickers)(vocals) with Arthur "Gaps" Hendrickson (vocals), Charlie Anderson (bass), Desmond Brown (keyboards), Compton Amanour (drums), Charlie Bainbridge (drums). Davies was a friend of Jerry Dammers and when Dammers' band The Specials released their first single, they had no B-side ready for release. Dammers called upon Davies who already had a completed instrumental which was reworked and placed on the flip side of the single as "The Selecter". The single reached number 6 in the charts and The Selecter needed to become a reality band and not a studio creation. Davies enlisted Black as a vocalist and added the other members from existing local bands to form one of the best of the original two tone label ska bands. They broke up after two short years. Black did some solo and acting work and in 1990, she and Davies were approached by the band Bad Manners to make a guest appearance in one of their tours. They accepted and found their audience intact and enthusiastic. The two reformed the band and Davies left again in 1993 to work on his projects called Selecter Instrumental and Box Of Blues. The current line-up of The Selecter includes Pauline Black (vocals), Nick Welsh (ex-Bad Manners)(bass), Martin Stewart (ex-Bad Manners)(keyboards), Perry Melius (ex-Bad Manners)(drums). Black and Welsh also release music together as Selecter Acoustic. Of the original members, Bainbridge played with the reformed 90's version of The Specials, Hendrickson rejoined The Selecter briefly in the 90's, Anderson and Amanour moved to Africa and Brown retired from music. 1979-81/1992-present.
