BRINSLEY SCHWARZ

From
London. Led
by Brinsley Schwarz (guitar) with Nick Lowe (vocals/bass), Ian Gomm
(vocals/guitar), Bob Andrews (keyboards) and Billy Rankin (drums).
This pub rock band was the best on the pre-punk scene.
Originally called Kippington Lodge, the band members would all
play key
parts in the coming new wave movement. The
band is also known for their ill fated gig at the Fillmore East in New
York City. In April of 1970, the band was to be the opening act
there for Van Morrison and the band's management company thought it
would be a great idea to fly the British music press to NYC to see the
band perform. One disaster after another happened. First
the cost of flying the press to New York cost $204,000 which was a huge
amount of money back then. Next, the band had their visas denied
on a technicality and were able to leave only on the morning of the
show leaving them absolutely no rehearsal time. Finally, the
plane that was to carry the journalists devloped engine problems and
they were all delayed almost a day. When the show finally
happened, the band were unrehearsed, the press were grouchy and drunk
and the reviews killed their career. The band soldiered on for
five years but never made it big. Nick
Lowe became the most prominent with his successful solo career as a
singer, producer and member of Rockpile.
Gomm also went on to have a huge solo hit with "Hold On". Andrews and Schwarz would become part of The
Rumour, best
known for backing Graham Parker on many albums.
Their biggest hit ("What's So Funny 'Bout Peace Love &
Understanding") would later become an even huger hit for Elvis Costello
& The Attractions. Quite
unexpectedly, their album "It's All Over Now" which contains the
earliest version of Nick Lowe & Ian Gomm's "Cruel To Be Kind" and
was thought to be lost, turned up for sale on Gomm's website in 2003.
