From Athens, Georgia.  Led by Peter Buck (guitar) and Michael Stipe (vocals) with Mike Mills (bass).  Starting out with a jangly guitar sound reminiscent of The Byrds, the Rapid Eye Movement made their mark with the mumbled vocals of Michael Stipe.  Stipe eventually began enunciating in time to find mass success as the biggest band in modern rock during the late 1980's.  Health problems during the band's 1996-97 world tour resulted in three separate hospitalizations for group members.  Drummer Bill Berry's aneurysm helped him decide to leave the group permanently in 1997.  The group has decided not to formally replace him. 1982-present.
