IGGY POP
THE STOOGES

From Detroit , Michigan. James Osterberg is the original punk rocker. As Iggy Pop and beginning with his band The Stooges in the late 60's, he's been making punk rock longer than just about anyone. Widely considered a garage band at the time, The Stooges were: Iggy Stooge (vocals), Ron Asheton (guitar), Dave Alexander (bass) and Scott Asheton (drums). The Stooges were one of the first garage bands of the 60's to make their mark in rock in ways that other bands only wished. Noisy, untamed, with a writhing unpredictable lead singer, the group flirted with success but dissolved into drug abuse and eventually split apart in 1974. Afterwards, Iggy's acquaintance with David Bowie did much to enter Iggy into a new phase of his career, producing some of his best work ("The Idiot","Lust For Life"). The punk and new wave scene then ramped into the late-70's and Iggy became widely respected by his new peers. Sometimes called "The Godfather of Punk", Iggy is widely known for his long history of drug abuse and abusing himself physically on stage. His habit of diving into a crowd began the whole stage diving craze and crowd surfing that followed. In 1999, 25 years after the demise of The Stooges, the Asheton brothers performed on Iggy's album "Skull Ring" prompting rumors of a Stooges reunion. This was slow coming however but eventually bore fruit in the first new Stooges album in 33 years entitled "The Weirdness", released in 2007. The beginning of 2009 however started on a low note when Ron Asheton passed away at age 60 on January 5th, of natural causes. This prompted the return of later member James Williamson, back into The Stooges fold after a successful career in software development. Williamson says that being part of The Stooges again is how he wants to spend his retirement!
