THE POGUES

From Ireland and England.  Led by Shane MacGowan (vocals) with Peter "Spider" Stacy (vocals), Jem Finer (guitar), Jamie Clarke (bass), Darryl Hunt (guitar), Phil Chevron (guitar), Andrew Ranken (drums), James McNalley (piano) and David Coulter (percussion).  The band's original name was Pogue Mahone, Gaelic slang for "kiss my ass".  Specializing in traditional sounding folk songs from Ireland, England and Australia with their own sense of humor and lyrical rewrites.  MacGowan, the centerpiece of the band sang with a drunken snarl and many focused on his grin which lacked a few teeth.  When MacGowan was kicked out of the band for excessive drunkenness, former Clash front man Joe Strummer stepped in to tour with the band. Spider Stacy became the band's studio vocalist but two unsuccessful albums without MacGowan led the band to a break-up.  Original band member Cait O'Riordan left the group to marry and later divorce Elvis Costello.  MacGowan on the other hand wasted no time and formed a new band, Shane MacGowan & The Popes.  2004 sees the group reforming with MacGowan for some live Christmas shows in the UK.  1984-96.
