THE PLASTICS

From Tokyo, Japan.  Led by Hajime Tachibana (saxophone) with Toshio Nakanishi (vocals/guitar), Takemi Shima (programming), Masahide Sakuma (keyboards) and Chica Sato (vocals).  Almost like a Japanese version of The B-52's, their music was tremendous fun.  Spitting out disjointed sentences in broken English, they were an inventive if overlooked new wave group.  Tachibana went on to a solo career and became a prominent artist as well, even designing a "Swatch" watch.  The group broke-up in 1981 but briefly reunited in 1988.  In between those times, Nakanishi and Sato formed the dance groups Melon, and Water Melon.  Tachibana became a graphics designer.  1979-81
