PERE UBU
From Cleveland, Ohio. Led by David Thomas (vocals) with Tom Herman (guitar), Robert Wheeler (keyboards), Michele Temple (bass) and Steve Mehlman (drums). The Pere Ubu story begins with Rocket From The Tombs, an early Cleveland punk band that existed about a year and a half that is noted primarily for what happened after it split. Tombs featured madman/genius Peter Laughner (vocals/guitar) and with these early punk pioneers offered punk in Ohio when the only other punk band around was Devo. Early versions of Ubu classics ("Final Solution"/"30 Seconds...") can be found on the posthumous Tombs release. Lead singer Crocus Behemoth (David Thomas) eventually broke away with half the band to form Pere Ubu while the other half became Frankenstein and eventually changed their name to The Dead Boys. Early versions of both groups played the same songs which led to some confusion, while Laughner went solo and died from a drug overdose shortly after. Pere Ubu created many early punk standards and lived by reputation until they disbanded in 1982. After a five year break, they reformed in 1987 and are still here to give us great music. Fan support has played a big part in their sticking around. The band's name comes from the avante-garde play "Ubu Roi" by Alfred Jarry. In 2003, Thomas reformed Rocket From The Tombs with original guitarist Cheetah Chrome for live touring and recording. 1974-82/1987-present.
