THE PANDORAS

From California. Led by Paula Pierce (vocals/guitar) with Gwynne Kahn (keyboards), Casey X (aka Casey Gomez)(drums) and Bambi Conway (bass). The band that should've followed The Go-Go's to musical fame and fortune was this band and not The Bangles. The great music gods had other plans for poor Paula though. Friction after the first album led Paula to drop the rest of the band and form a new line-up of Karen Blankfeld (drums), Julie Patchouli (bass) and Melanie Vammen (keyboards). This line-up produced one fantastic album for Rhino that with better distribution could have led to great things. More band changes with a new drummer and second guitarist came, including Kim Shattuck. The band tightened up and followed a harder sound straying towards hair metal, then an album produced for Elektra, their intended breakthrough album, got shelved. Pierce became disillusioned and broke up the band by 1988, Shattuck and Vammen reteamed to form The Muffs. The sad story of Paula Pierce's run with bad luck doesn't end there however. She died of a brain aneurysm at age 31 in 1991. A fitness buff, Paula was exercising in very hot weather when it happened. If you have a love for 60's garage punk, do yourself a favor and find some of this music, you won't regret it. Pierce had also been recording and playing for a decade before forming The Pandoras in the bands The Rage and Action Now. 1984-88.
