SINEAD O'CONNOR

From Dublin, Ireland.  She was discovered by the drummer of In Tua Nua and ended up joining the group for a short time.  The band's connections to U2, led The Edge to ask for her to sing on a track for a movie he was scoring called "The Prisoner".  The result was the haunting "Heroine".  A solo contract quickly followed and starting her career as a teen led to many mistakes and brilliant naive moments as well.  She is notorious for several actions that have hampered her career including tearing up a picture of the Pope on live television and being booed off stage shortly after at a tribute performance to Bob Dylan.  She also refused to allow an arena to play "The Star Spangled Banner" before a show which resulted in a rebuke by Frank Sinatra who said he would "kick her ass"!  Always a rebel, she conceived and birthed several children out of wedlock.  O'Connor is best known for her award winning video of "Nothing Compares 2 U", a song originally written by Prince.  A woman of strong beliefs, her shaved head and drab clothing served her own purposes but helped alienate the public as well.  An album of torch songs followed by a cover of a Nirvana song also left many listeners scratching their heads.  In 1998 she signed a multi-million dollar contract with a major record label which shows that she has not yet been rejected by the industry, the public will no doubt have the last word though.  In 1999, Sinead became Mother Bernadette Marie O'Connor a priest in the Latin Tridentine Order of the Catholic church, a sect not approved by the Pope (big surprise). O'Connor had attempted an abortive retirement early after her first round of controversy, and was said to have been bordering on an emotional breakdown.  Later she announced herself a lesbian, only to marry a man the following month.  In 2003 O'Connor decided once again to retire and allowed her public these words on her website, "So I ask with love, that I be left in peace and privacy by people who love my records...My advice to anyone who ever admires a so-called 'celebrity' if you see them in the street, don't even look at them.  If you love them, then the lovingest thing you can do, to show them so, is leave them alone and don't stare at them! ... Or make them get their picture taken, or write their names on bits of paper.  That's pieces of them.  And one day they wake up with nothing left of themselves to give."  By 2005, Sinead was back with a new album.  1987-present.
