KLAUS NOMI

From Berlin, Germany. Klaus Sperber was born in Bavaria, and first came to the United States employed as a baker. He became involved in cabaret theatre during the mid 1970's and developed his unique character by 1978. His strange combination of warped cover tunes of the 60's and Teutonic German opera made him unique in sound as well as appearance. An underground artist at best, Klaus was used as a side vocalist by David Bowie on a television episode of "Saturday Night Live" in 1979, which drew attention to his strange voice and equally exotic appearance. "Total Eclipse" became a new wave classic and his take on "Ding Dong (The Witch Is Dead)" is amazingly intolerable. Klaus unfortunately was one of the first people in the entertainment world to notably die of AIDS on August 8, 1983. Had he lived, he probably would have been a well known persona in the alternative theatre and music worlds. 1982-83.
