NIRVANA

From Aberdeen, Washington.  Led by Kurt Cobain (vocals/guitar) with Dave Grohl (drums) and Krist Novoselic (bass).  The band that broke the grunge movement in terms of public acceptance.  Cobain's personal difficulties however came to a head when he committed suicide on April 5, 1994 by a self inflicted gunshot wound after a month of other drug related attempts.  Before the group ended, they had introduced a fourth member to the band, guitarist Pat Smear (formerly of The Germs).  The band brought a new era of commercial success to alternative rock by leading the way for the many grunge acts that followed and accompanied them.  However the success of Nirvana also called an end to an era of alternative rock, leading commercial alternative radio away from its established artists and instead turning to heavier sounds of metal and rap that were ironically what alternative radio tried to get away from in the beginning.  Nirvana's ultimate legacy was the death of the first era of alternative music.  Grohl has since become the torch bearer of the group, expanding the sound and direction in his own work with the Foo Fighters.  Novoselic went on to form Sweet 75 and later joined with ex-Meat Puppets and Sublime members to form Eyes Adrift.  1988-93.
