NICO

From Cologne, Germany. This Andy Warhol "discovery" was not only a fashion model since 1954 but an acting hopeful as well (a small part in Fellini's "La Dolce Vita"). She was already acting in small movie roles when she moved to London in the early 1960's. There she became associated with The Rolling Stones, briefly having an affair with Brian Jones. Through him she ended up recording her first single in 1964, a song produced by Jimmy Page and written by Gordon Lightfoot called "I'm Not Sayin'". Nico then moved to New York City to study method acting with Lee Strasburg and was in the same class as Marilyn Monroe! Nico then met Bob Dylan who not only penned a classic song and gave it to her ("I'll Keep It With Mine") but was the person who ultimately introduced her to Andy Warhol. Nico's real name was Christa Paffgen and she joined The Velvet Underground as a vocalist for their first classic album on Warhol's insistence. Nico was not welcome to stay and she left because the group wouldn't make her the sole vocalist. As a solo act, she continued through to the mid-70's before letting her drug indulgences get the best of her. At this time she also had an affair with her band's guitarist, a then very young Jackson Browne. She went through a torch singer phase before her untimely death in 1988. Her death came after falling from a bicycle and suffering a cerebral hemorrhage at age 49. According to her son, she was on her way into town to score some marijuana but she had been severely addicted to heroin as well for many many years. Nico's attraction and tragedy were equally compelling, spurred on by her interest in stardom and her total disinterest in life itself. Her affair with The Doors' Jim Morrison was one of the most influential points in her life, and her son was the result of a brief affair with French actor Alain Delon. 1964-85.
