THE NEW YORK DOLLS

 

 

From New York City.  Led by David Johansen (vocals) with Sylvain Sylvain (guitar), Johnny Thunders (John Genzale)(guitar), Arthur "Killer" Kane (bass) and Jerry Nolan (drums).  American glam rock that paved the way for the New York punk scene.   Johansen's Mick Jagger-ish vocals and appearance was helpful in establishing the band as an important live act.  Their two albums fell short of selling the public on their androgynous look though.  While touring the UK, their original drummer Billy Murcia died of a heroin overdose.  Sadly, Thunders would eventually die of the same dependency, while Nolan passed on from an illness.  In the band's last days, they tried to stage a new career direction under the leadership of Malcolm McLaren.  McLaren's mistakes were turned into lessons learned when he managed his next group, The Sex Pistols.  Johansen slowly moved into an acting career, a solo recording career, and a new identity as Buster Poindexter.  Thunders and Nolan formed The Heartbreakers.  Sylvain had a brief solo career as well.  In 2004, the band reformed for a few dates at the request of Morrissey, who in his youth was president of the UK fan club.  This begat more dates and a possible new album but Killer Kane suddenly died of leukemia in July, 2004 at age 55.  This leaves Sylvain and Johansen to carry on, which they have been doing enthusiastically.  1972-75/2006-present.
