MUSICAL YOUTH

From Birmingham, England. Led by Dennis Seaton (vocals) with Patrick Waite (bass), Freddie "Junior" Waite (drums), Michael Grant (keyboards) and Kelvin Grant (guitar). A group of teens rework The Mighty Diamonds' "Pass The Kutchie" about smoking marijuana, into "Pass The Dutchie" about sharing food. A one hit wonder, the band didn't deal too well with life after the fame. Patrick ended up in jail several times and was dead at age 24 of a supposedly non-drug related heart attack. Seaton and Michael Grant are still performing as Musical Youth today. Kelvin and his brother do not speak today, Kelvin having become disillusioned with the business and life in general and lives a life far from the public eye. Junior Waite lives with his mother but suffers from mental problems brought about by a hit on the head earlier in his life. Musical Youth stands as a fascinating testament to success in the early days of M-TV, the first black artists to have their video shown on the channel. They also stand as a sad example for what success can lead to at a young age when it is taken away just as quickly. Two original members have reformed the band as of 2001 and they sometimes perform. A single with Pato Banton on shared vocals was issued in 2004. 1981-84/2004.
