MOBY
From New York City. The king of American techno. Originally a hardcore punk musician, his first release was in 1983 with his band the Vatican Commandos while he was still in high school. Moby has played guitar for Ultra Vivid Scene and has filled in on vocals for Flipper as well! Moby's real name is Richard Melville Hall, a distant relative of Herman Melville, the author of "Moby Dick". Thus the name Moby was a natural. His about face by becoming a club d.j. led to his fusion of acid house sounds that resulted in his first hit "Go". He has taken a backseat to more noticeable British acts in the last few years but still remains highly influential. He has created an annual road show called the Area Tour which featured many culturally diverse acts. A known activist, he has spoken out on behalf of vegetarian, anti-fur and anti-violence causes. 2002 was a year that saw him taunted by Eminem and in December, attacked by two men while signing autographs, fortunately he was not severely injured. 1983-present.
