MINISTRY

 

 

From Chicago, Illinois.  Led by Al Jourgensen (vocals/guitar/keyboards) with Paul Barker (bass/programming) and a revolving group of sidemen.  Starting as a new wave dance band, the group slowly devolved into industrial thrash.  Jourgensen also records for the Wax Trax label under other band names (1,000 Homo DJ's, Revolting Cocks, etc.).  Tracking the band's changing sound shows that in the beginning they were competent new wavers, on a league with Depeche Mode and Heaven 17.  Their Wax Trax years created brilliant steps forward in their sound and an independent label allowed them the room to stretch.  Most surprising of all was their total abandonment of their sound to create something new.  On the cutting edge of the industrial movement in the late 80's, their only sonic competition at the time was Nine Inch Nails.   But Ministry continued to move further and further away into metal and eventually lost all but their hardcore supporters.  After 24 years, Jourgensen pulled the plug on Ministry in 2007.  1983-2007.
