MIDNIGHT OIL
From Sydney, Australia. Led by Peter Garrett (vocals) with Bones Hillman (bass), Jim Morginie (keyboards), Martin Rotsey (guitar) and Rob Hirst (drums). The band had several independent Australian releases before hitting it big worldwide in 1983. The band's tribal sounding music often reflected poignant lyrics about respect for other peoples and the environment. Eventually the band lost their worldwide momentum but remained big stars in Australia. In 2002, Garrett left the band to devote himself to a full time career protecting the environment after 25 years with the band. Garrett is an environmental and political activist and ran for a seat in the Australian senate in 1984. Interestingly he lost by only a small margin and gathered close to a quarter of a million votes! From 1989-93 he served two terms as the president of the Australian Conservation Foundation. Garrett was elected as the Labor Member for Kingsford Smith at the 2004 federal election. In 2007, he was appointed Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts and currently holds that position. 2009 saw the band reunite for a wildfire relief benefit concert. 1977-2002.
