MERCURY REV
From Buffalo, New York. Led by Jonathan Donahue (vocals/guitar) with Sean "Grasshopper" Mackowiak (guitar), Dave Fridmann (bass), Carlos Molina (second bass) and Jeff Mercel (drums). In the 1990's, the idea of a progressive rock band survivng or even becoming successful was a crap shoot. Since they were viewed as not only progressive but also psychedelic, this band could actually maintain a cool reputation for being an indy outsider band. Donahue accepted an offer to become a second guitarist for Flaming Lips and does double duty in both bands. After original vocalist David Baker left the band (after the second album), their sound and approach changed a bit. Mercury Rev is still an outsider band in the United States but has found decent success in the UK. 1991-present.
