THE MEAT PUPPETS

From Phoenix, Arizona.  Led by brothers Curt Kirkwood (vocals/guitar) and Chris Kirkwood (vocals/bass) with Derrick Bostrom (drums).  Beginning as a punk outfit, they evolved into a more commercially accessible unit by the time they hit big with their eighth album.  An influential independent act and one of the great overlooked American rock bands, influencing many including Nirvana.  After a brief stint of popularity generated by that Nirvana friendship, the band went on hiatus and Curt Kirkwood moved to Austin, Texas and formed the Royal Neanderthal Orchestra.  Bostrom meanwhile said the Meat Puppets would not retire.  Turns out that he was right, Curt made a new album with a new line-up of Meat Puppets that didn't include his brother OR Bostrom!  In January 2004, Chris Kirkwood was injured after being shot by a security guard over a dispute concerning a parking space!  By August he was sentenced to a federal prison term of almost two years.  In 2007, the brothers restarted the band with Ted Marcus replacing Bostrom on drums.  Interestingly, Bostrom still runs the band's website!  1981-present.
