MALCOLM McLAREN
From London. Malcolm McLaren was an entrepreneur and an opportunist. He was an expert at exploitation. In the late 1970's, he journeyed to New York City where he somehow got the position of manager to the New York Dolls in that band's final days. Taking what he learned from the experience back to England, he was the catalyst that made The Sex Pistols a possibility and was responsible for the assembly of Bow Wow Wow and Siouxsie & The Banshees as well. He also took advantage of the club scene by making albums under his own name that hopped into hip hop before it became popular, with newer albums covering the worlds of opera, vogue dancing, Paris jazz and more. Malcolm was also known for his trend setting fashion stores and his marriage to fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. He was hired by the Polish government to improve tourism in that nation, and in 2000 he decided to run for mayor of London. Needless to say, that didn't become reality, and he fought a hard battle against cancer in his last years, ultimately losing his battle on April 8, 2010. He was 64 years old. 1983-present.
