KIRSTY MacCOLL
From Croydon, England. Kirsty MacColl (vocals) was sometimes best known as the wife of producer Steve Lillywhite, who would sometimes help out by contributing back up vocals to bands that he produced. This led to a full fledged career as a solo and backing singer. Her composition "They Don't Know" was not a hit for her but later became a huge hit for Tracey Ullman. Likewise she herself scored a massive hit with a cover of Billy Bragg's "A New England". She is also the daughter of Ewan MacColl, a well known British folk singer who also wrote "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" which was a major hit for Roberta Flack. Kirsty's biggest hit was the seasonal "Fairytale Of New York", a duet with The Pogues. 2000 saw her career soar after a long lull with the release of her Latin flavored "Tropical Brainstorm" album. In late December of 2000, Kirsty was tragically killed by a speedboat while swimming with her sons in waters off of Mexico. 1979-2000.
