THE MC5

 

 

From Detroit, Michigan.  Originally known as The Motor City 5.  Led by Wayne Kramer (guitar) with Rob Tyner (vocals), Fred "Sonic" Smith (guitar), Michael Davis (bass) and Dennis Thompson (drums).  This heavy metal band fused freeform expression and willfully militant lyrics into the angst music that would later inspire punk rock.  No "summer of love" musings here!  Their sound was wild, untamed and rawer than anything of their day.  Even hardcore speedpunk of the 90's had a hard time matching the sound of chaos that this band created.  Tyner died right before a planned reunion could take place in 1991.  Wayne Kramer has returned to recording in the 90's as a solo artist after spending many years in prison.  Fred "Sonic" Smith married punk priestess Patti Smith and settled down with her.  He died of a heart attack in 1994.  In 2003, the three living members of the group rebanded as The MC5 once again with guest vocalists during their tour and as of 2005, "Handsome Dick" Manitoba of The Dictators has become their permanent touring vocalist.  1966-71.
