K.D. LANG
From Edmoton, Alberta, Canada. Kathryn Dawn Lang is a singer with a strong affection for all styles of music and made a name for herself in the United States singing plenty of it. First drawing attention with a Dave Edmunds produced disc with many rockabilly examples, she quickly shifted to standard old school country. She ran into Nashville resistance though and connecting herself to an anti-meat campaign didn't sit too well in the heartland of America. Neither did her butch appearance. On a lark, she dropped the appearance to become "Miss Chatelaine" for a video and found a new audience, she also came out of the closet which unofficially ended her country music period. Greeting the 90's with a string of dance floor hits, Lang was still a bit out of place but doing what she wanted, when she wanted, which can't be a bad thing. Recent years have seen her singing old standards from the 1940's and 50's. 1984-present.
