THE KNACK

From Los Angeles.  Led by Doug Fieger (vocals/guitar) with Burton Averre (guitar), Prescott Niles (bass) and Billy Ward (drums).  The Knack seemingly came out of nowhere, hyped beyond belief by their label Capitol Records.  It started with the photo session for the album cover, a shot reminiscent of the cover of Meet The Beatles, then the reactivation of the Capitol orange and yellow swirl label on the 45 and the all black label with rainbow border on the album, all used in The Beatles heyday.  Who were these upstarts that Capital was blatantly shoving down our throats?  They were the new voice of power pop and after the astounding success of "My Sharona", the band fell victim to its own hype resulting in a backlash of "Nuke the Knack".  But success was hard won for Feiger, he had also released two albums in 1970 as the leader of the band Sky and it took him nine years to get another record contract.  Sophomore slump hit The Knack hard and by the third album everybody including the band members had lost interest.  But Feiger's talent was being wasted without the band and he worked hard to reassemble the group and try again.  Beginning in 1990, the band made many steady comeback attempts.  2006 was a hard year for the band when Fieger had to have major brain surgery and original drummer Bruce Gary died from lymphoma.  Fieger recovered and toured with the band again but after a six year cancer battle, Doug succumbed on Valentine's Day 2010 at age 57.  1979-81/1990-2008.
