JOY DIVISION
From Manchester, England. Led by Ian Curtis (vocals) with Peter Hook (bass), Bernard Sumner (guitar) and Stephen Morris (drums). This band created one masterful dance hit in "Love Will Tear Us Apart" in 1979. Dark, gloomy, atmospheric but not gothic, they began to define a distinct sound that would be associated with Manchester. Originally known as Stiff Kittens and then Warsaw, Joy Division fell apart when Curtis hung himself on the eve of their American tour. His death was spawned by depression resulting from infidelity on his part and marital problems. His wife had left and taken their baby girl, by the next morning Curtis was dead. The band pulled together and transcended the experience, changing their name to New Order, they became worldwide hit makers. 1978-80.
