TOM JONES
From Pontypridd, South Wales, England. From a string of second or third wave Vegas style performers that included Englebert Humperdink and Wayne Newton, came Tom Jones Woodward. A frilly tuxedo shirt and ultra-tight pants earned him the odd tribute of having women's underwear cast at him at every performance. Early hits included the theme to a James Bond film, and chart toppers like "Delila", the tongue-in-cheek "What's New Pussycat?" and "It's Not Unusual". So how do we get from 60's schmaltz star to alternative icon? It all started with Radio Caroline, the pirate radio station at sea that defied the programming of the BBC. They were the first to break Tom as an artist. Years later and a career in decline, 1987 saw a comeback with the single "A Boy From Nowhere". This attracted the attention of The Art Of Noise who enlisted Jones for a cover version of Prince's hit "Kiss". The tongue in cheek combination of new wave and old wave broke ground for Jones that was a boost for his career and his hip factor. Further collaborations appeared with Tori Amos, The Cardigans, and others resulting in a collection of duets covering other modern classics. Now Jones is hotter than ever on the performing circuit in ways that his old peers could never be. In 2005, Tom joined Elton, Paul and Mick and became Sir Tom Jones when he was knighted by the Queen of England! 1965-present.
