DAVID JOHANSEN

From Staten Island, New York. After ending his time in The New York Dolls, David made several albums of quality rock before devoting his career to acting and becoming a lounge lizard (as Buster Poindexter). Johansen's star faded again for a few years before he took that whiskey voice and put it to good use again. Inspired by the resurgence of the bluegrass movement after the unexpected success of the soundtrack to the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?", Johansen formed a new band called the Harry Smiths (after the folk musicologist) and began belting out folk and blues rarities. A chance opportunity arranged by Morrissey, (a onetime New York Dolls fan club president in his teens), got Johansen back together with the surviving Dolls members for a performance which led to a new album with his original band. 1978-84.
